The Fellowship of the Ring is scattered. The quest to destroy the One Ring now falls on two different paths, told in two intertwining stories.
In the first, Frodo Baggins and his loyal companion Samwise Gamgee continue their long and arduous journey to Mordor, the very heart of the enemy's land. They are joined by the twisted creature Gollum, who promises to guide them through the desolate lands, but whose loyalty is as slippery as his past.
In the second, the remaining heroes—Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli—race to rescue their captured friends, Merry and Pippin. Their desperate pursuit leads them into the lands of Rohan, a kingdom on the brink of war. They become entangled in a great battle against the treacherous wizard Saruman and his armies of Uruk-hai, culminating in the epic siege of Helm's Deep.
